You're not alone, though. No matter if you're self-employed or running your own business, rest assured that there are others out there going through exactly the same. We've certainly been there, and over the years we've picked up a few golden rules for time management and stress management to make sure that we don't get overwhelmed. In this article, we're going to share some of the 3 effective tips for keeping on top of your workload and minimizing stress.

1. Work out

We know that after a long day at work, the last thing you often feel like doing is hitting the gym or throwing on your trainers for a run, but honestly - working out can be a huge help for stress management.

Firstly, it produces endorphins which make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Secondly, it helps to burn off all your pent-up energy which allows you to sleep more soundly. This is brilliant if you tend to lie in bed at night worrying about tomorrow's work tasks. Plus, high intensity exercise can really help you to get out some stress - it's amazing what a bit of kickboxing can do when you've feeling irritable!

2. Get seven to eight hours sleep every night

Are you getting enough or too much? 

Too little sleep makes you lethargic and less productive, and it can also make you feel downright grumpy and even more stressed. Too much sleep can have a similar impact on your energy levels and mood. The sweet spot is around seven to eight hours, so get yourself into a routine to ensure you get just enough rest.

We know it's tempting to have a lovely, lazy lie-in on your days off, but this can throw your sleeping pattern all out of whack and make it difficult for you to drop off at night and get up the next day. So, set your alarm for the same time every day, and don't you dare hit snooze when it goes off!

That doesn't mean to say you have to get up and be a busy bee at the weekends - just make sure you're awake, make yourself a cuppa and have a relaxed morning instead. That's what Sundays were made for, after all.

3. List tasks in order of importance

When you've got a to-do list as long as your arm, it's easy to become overwhelmed and feel the stress bubbling up. A great time management technique we've found is to simply list the most important tasks first, and complete them in order of importance.

This means that essential things are tackled straight away, and if you lose motivation or find yourself getting distracted later on, you'll still have been incredibly productive. Unimportant tasks can easily bog you down, so just look at them as bonus points - if you manage to tick them off after doing the big stuff, great! If not, it's not the end of the world.
